A Lesson in Keeping Your Hands Up, and Utilizing Range

Posted: August 19, 2010

I just saw this clip, and I thought it was a great way to demonstrate the lessons we so often cover in class. First let me start by saying that the guy that got knocked out is an extremely good martial artist. As always, when fatigue sets in, people make mistakes. In this case, as in so many others, his hands dropped and left him open. Secondly, he was trying for a knee, when he was in punching range. His opponent saw the opening and countered before he stepped into the appropriate range.

The force of the punch combined with his forward momentum, made the punch devastating. As the announcer said, that punch would’ve knocked out anyone.

“Jackie Chan: My Stunts”

Many of my students have heard me recommend the movie, “Jackie Chan: My Stunts”. This is a clip from that movie, where Jackie shows us some of his basic stunt falls. It also clearly demonstrates the difference between practice (on mattresses) and the actual finished product that you see on screen.

If you’re a Jackie Chan fan, this is definitely a movie you have to see. In addition to this type of scene, the movie also takes you behind the scenes and shows you how a lot of his famous scenes were set up.

Let me know what you think of the clip by posting a comment.
