Qi on the Show “Fight Science”
Posted: February 16, 2011
I really like this show. It’s always nice to see things that we speak of in a hypothetical context, quantified. This segment doesn’t try to give you an opinion about qi, but instead tries to explore it. In that respect, I think this is a pretty interesting clip.
I think the demonstration of the bat to the stomach was pretty impressive. Say what you will, but I’m sure if I asked for volunteers to hit in the stomach with a bat, I wouldn’t get any. That guy is pretty tough.
As far as the spear to the throat, I have seen that done many times before, and as the narrator said in the video, the collarbone took some of the force. In my opinion, I think the collarbone took all of the force. That is why the shaft bends downward. In essence he is re-directing the force so that it goes downward against his collarbone instead of into his throat. Even so, it takes a lot of time to do this so well that you can attempt it with a spear. He also had to maintain his focus and the pressure on the spear when the other guy hit him in the back. All in all it’s a great demonstration with what I believe to be a sound, scientific explanation.

This is a martial arts blooper reel. Most of you have seen this before, but I think it’s pretty funny.
Salt with Angelina Jolie

I thought this was a pretty good movie, with a lot of twists and turns. It had some good martial arts sequences as well. All in all, I thought Angelina Jolie did a great job with the action sequences.
