Bullying and Repercussions

I think that just about everyone in the world has seen the video below, but I just wanted to comment on it. There are so many things wrong with this chain of events, that it makes me wonder what kind of world we are leaving to our children, and more importantly what can be done differently.
First of all I feel badly for the large overweight kid that was being bullied. If you read the back-story on this event, you will find that this child is often bullied because of his weight. This is a sad statement for two reasons. The first is that we are raising kids that will bully someone who is overweight. The second reason is that if this child doesn’t change his eating and exercise habits, he will not only be facing bullies, but also a series of long term health problems as well. Obesity is a growing problem in the world, and we need to do a better job of training our kids in this regard.
Another thing that bothers me is the little bully’s character. What made him think that this behavior was acceptable, and how many other people has he picked on. More importantly how will this video affect him in the future. Will he always be known as the kid who got beaten up on youtube. I wonder what long term psychological effects he will suffer in the future.
Don’t get me wrong, we all want people to stick up for themselves. In fact as a martial arts teacher I teach people to do this every day. But I also see what others fail to see. Not only do we teach kids to defend themselves, but we also get them into better shape so that they are less likely to be picked on. We also teach them to respect others instead of picking on them. And lastly, we teach them how to avoid fighting in the first place.
I wonder if the events that take place on this video could have been entirely avoided if either of these students had been involved with a good martial arts teacher.
